Earlier Report Observations

Production of groundnut oil-cake in the Philippines began the period at 14 304 t in 2018, a level supported by robust demand for coconut products which benefited processors of oilseed residues. Output then contracted over the following two years, declining to 11 224 t by 2020.

A sustained recovery started in 2021 when strong global demand for coconut oil, with exports reaching a four-year high, stimulated the domestic processing sector and lifted oil-cake production to 13 171 t. The expansion accelerated sharply in 2022 as high worldwide vegetable oil prices encouraged greater crushing activity, pushing output to a peak of 17 205 t even as El Niño weather conditions reduced coconut yields.

In 2023, production moderated slightly to 15 883 t, with the ongoing effects of El Niño continuing to constrain agricultural supply, though the market remained supported by elevated international prices and regulatory efforts by the Philippine Coconut Authority to revitalize the industry.
