The Swiss grape market volume declined from 176 thousand tons in 2018 to 142 thousand tons in 2020, as wine consumption showed a decreasing trend. During this period, the share of domestic white wine recovered to about 57% in 2020 and the number of wine trade businesses expanded significantly, indicating a shift toward specialized retail.

A further contraction to 113 thousand tons occurred in 2021. The market then rebounded to 160 thousand tons in 2022, supported by wine sales in major retail chains returning to 2019 levels. In 2023, grape market volume reached 162 thousand tons, aided by a 2% increase in Swiss wine production that year.

For 2024, industry reports highlight a historically low grape harvest due to unfavorable weather, along with new import regulations and enhanced funding for promoting Swiss wine. Consumer preferences continued to move toward quality, sustainability, and non-alcoholic wine alternatives.

Switzerland's grape production has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 105.7 thousand tons of grapes, which represents a 14.8% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production actually increased by 5.4%, translating to an average annual growth rate of 1.8%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 140.7 thousand tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 40.2%.

Switzerland's grape production value has fallen for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 329.5 million US dollars, marking a 1.8% decline from 2019. Over the four-year span from 2017 to 2020, however, the production value grew by 19.1%, averaging 6.0% per year. The peak value occurred in 2018 at 450.5 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 62.8%. The most significant drop was in 2019, with a decrease of 25.5%.

Switzerland's grape exports have decreased for the second year running. In 2020, the country exported 83 tons of grapes, down 43.4% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 64.1%, which corresponds to an average annual decline of 28.9%. The highest export volume was in 2018 at 279 tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 20.0%. The most substantial decrease occurred in 2019, with a drop of 47.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, the Netherlands, and Turkey were consistently the main destinations for Switzerland's grape exports by volume. Germany accounted for 39.2% of exports, the Netherlands for 26.0%, and Turkey for 9.8%. Together, these three countries represented 75.1% of total export flows.

Switzerland's grape export value has declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 260 thousand US dollars, a decrease of 34.8% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, export value fell by 59.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -26.0%. The peak was in 2018 at 893 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 39.3%. The most significant decline was in 2019, with a drop of 55.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, the Netherlands, and Turkey were the top contributors to Switzerland's grape export value. Germany made up 37.8% of exports by value, the Netherlands 29.3%, and Turkey 8.9%. Collectively, these three countries accounted for 76.0% of total export flows.

Imports grapes to Switzerland

After two years of decline, Switzerland's grape imports increased in 2020. The country imported 36 338 tons of grapes, up 10.1% from the previous year. However, over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 7.1%, averaging a 2.4% annual decline. The lowest import volume was in 2019 at 33 017 tons, and the largest annual decrease occurred in 2018 at 10.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Italy, Turkey, and South Africa were the primary sources for Switzerland's grape imports by volume. Italy accounted for 61.2% of imports, Turkey for 7.9%, and South Africa for 7.2%. Together, these three countries represented 76.3% of total import flows.

Following a two-year decline, Switzerland's grape import value rose in 2020. The country imported approximately 89 244 thousand US dollars worth of grapes, a notable increase of 15.1% compared to 2019. Over the four-year span from 2017 to 2020, however, import value decreased by 2.2%, averaging a 0.7% annual decline. The lowest value was in 2019 at 77 560 thousand US dollars, and the largest annual drop was in 2018 at 8.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy, South Africa, and Turkey were the main sources in the geographical breakdown of Switzerland's grape imports by value. Italy contributed 55.0% of import value, South Africa 9.4%, and Turkey 7.5%. Combined, these three countries accounted for 71.8% of total import flows.
