Malta's grape market opened the 2018-2023 period at 5 580 t, supported by new investment from foreign wine companies like Marchesi Antinori and a comprehensive ten-year government agriculture policy aimed at revitalizing viticulture. However, the market contracted to 4 068 t by 2020, primarily due to a significant reduction in available agricultural land and a 26.7% drop in the agricultural labor force, which directly constrained grape cultivation and production.

Market volume stabilized around 4 065 t in 2021. A notable recovery to 5 015 t occurred in 2022, driven by EU support initiatives like the school fruit and vegetable scheme and the implementation of Malta's National Agricultural Policy, which emphasized competitiveness, diversification, and better resource management for the grape and wine sector.

The market volume declined to 4 410 t in 2023. Ongoing government support for the harvest season and private sector projects, such as Delicata winery's program assisting over 200 local growers with modern methods, continued to shape the industry. In 2024, the grape harvest began under favorable conditions, with regulatory oversight on labeling ensuring compliance with EU standards for the sector.

Grape production in Malta has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, Malta produced 2 890 tonnes of grapes, marking a significant 10.8% decrease from the previous year.
