Grape production in China grew consistently from 13,667 thousand tons in 2018 to 16,166 thousand tons in 2023. This expansion was primarily driven by increased planting areas, particularly the rapid spread of the Sunshine Rose variety, and sustained government support policies aimed at developing the grape and wine industry.

The domestic grape market volume also rose, reaching 15,828 thousand tons in 2023, as higher domestic output offset declining imports. However, overproduction of table grapes, especially Sunshine Rose, led to a substantial drop in wholesale prices by 2023, which contributed to the contraction in the market's dollar value after its peak in 2020.

Technological advancements, such as the adoption of rain-shelter cultivation and the development of new grape varieties, improved yields and allowed for regional expansion. Concurrently, policy measures supporting winemaking and a growing trend toward domestic wine consumption helped sustain demand for wine grapes, while new entrants and an increasing number of grape-growing enterprises kept the market dynamic.

China's grape production increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 14 314 thousand tons of grapes, representing a 0.8% rise from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 9.4%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 3.0%.

China's grape production value rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 39 754 million US dollars, marking a modest increase of 7.3% over the past year. From 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 16.9%, equating to an annualized rate of 5.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 33 402 million US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 1.8%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest increase of 10.9%.

China's grape exports increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 456.3 thousand tons, showing a strong rise of 12.2% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 55.1%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia were the largest destinations for China's grape exports in volume terms. Thailand accounted for 30.0% of exports, Vietnam for 23.8%, and Indonesia for 14.9%. Together, these three countries comprised 68.7% of total export flows.

China's grape export value increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 1 267 million US dollars, representing a robust increase of 19.4% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value grew by 65.8%, with a CAGR of 18.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 735 million US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 3.8%. In 2019, exports experienced the largest increase of 44.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia consistently remained the main destinations for China's grape exports in value terms. Thailand accounted for 29.3% of exports, Vietnam for 22.9%, and Indonesia for 17.8%. Together, these three countries represented 70.0% of total export flows.

Imports grapes to China

After two years of growth, China's grape import volume declined. In 2020, imports totaled 272.8 thousand tons, which is 6.9% lower than in 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 2.1%, with a CAGR of 0.7%. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 293.0 thousand tons, which also saw the largest increase of 8.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Chile, Peru, and Australia were the largest contributors to China's grape imports in volume terms. Chile accounted for 40.3% of imports, Peru for 20.1%, and Australia for 19.4%. Together, these three countries made up 79.9% of total import flows.

After two years of increase, China's grape import value declined. In 2020, imports came to 676 million US dollars, down by 3.7% compared with 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, import value increased by 6.7%, equating to an annualized rate of 2.2%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 702 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 9.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Chile, Australia, and Peru stood out as the main sources for China's grape imports in value terms. Chile accounted for 38.6% of imports, Australia for 24.4%, and Peru for 20.7%. Together, these three countries represented 83.7% of total import flows.
