The Slovak grape wine spirits market began the period with regulatory foundations as two new EU regulations on wine sector geographical indications and traditional terms took effect in 2018, while industry representation consolidated through a merger of producer associations. Subsequently, rising cost pressures impacted the sector: grape cultivation was loss-making due to high production costs and subsidy structures in 2019, and energy costs continued to burden farms and state-owned enterprises in 2020. These factors contributed to a contraction in trade, with imports falling from 9.8 million $ in 2018 to 7.1 million $ in 2020 and exports plummeting from 3.3 million $ to 1.5 million $ over the same two years.

From 2021 onward, the market recovered and expanded. A shift in consumer preferences toward organic, non-alcoholic, and premium grape wine spirits stimulated import demand, which reached 12.8 million $ in 2023. Simultaneously, producers anticipated the new EU labeling rules that would become mandatory in December 2023, leading to a surge in exports to 6.2 million $ in 2023. Domestic production also increased in 2022, reaching 3.5 million $, before declining as the industry adapted to the regulatory changes. As a result, the total market size in value terms grew from 9.2 million $ in 2021 to 9.8 million $ in 2023.

The full implementation of the new labeling requirements in 2024, which mandate detailed composition, energy, and nutrition information on labels, prompted a market adjustment. Imports dropped to 8.8 million $, exports fell to 3.2 million $, and production declined to 3.0 million $. Consequently, the overall market size decreased to 8.6 million $, reflecting the supply chain's adaptation to the updated regulatory framework.

Slovakia's exports of grape wine spirits declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country exported 381 thousand liters, which represents a sharp 47.8% drop compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 69.1%, with an average annual decline of 32.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Ukraine and Germany were the dominant markets for Slovakia's grape wine spirits exports in volume terms, together accounting for 92.9% of total shipments. All other countries made up the remaining share.

Slovakia's exports of grape wine spirits in value terms fell for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 1.498 million US dollars, marking a significant 41.4% decrease from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, export value dropped by 72.6%, which translates to an average annual decline of 35.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Ukraine was the primary destination for Slovakia's grape wine spirits exports in value terms, absorbing 75.2% of the total. The rest was distributed among a variety of smaller markets.

The data shows irregular changes, pointing to a volatile market environment. Import volumes reached their lowest point in 2020 at 368 thousand liters, down 83.0% from the previous year. In contrast, the peak was recorded in 2019 at 2.166 million liters, representing a 5.9-fold difference between the two years. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a jump of 188.9%.

During the 2017–2020 period, France, Albania, and Spain were the main sources of grape wine spirits imports to Slovakia in volume terms. France accounted for 40.0% of imports, Albania for 23.6%, and Spain for 13.4%, together making up 77.0% of total flows.

Slovakia's imports of grape wine spirits in value terms decreased for the third year in a row. In 2020, imports amounted to 7.140 million US dollars, a 14.5% drop compared to 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, import value fell by 43.1%, with an average annual decline of 17.1%.
