The market volume for grape wine and grape must in Latvia experienced significant growth from 2018 to 2020, rising from 11 054 thousand liters to 23 181 thousand liters. After peaking in 2020, the market contracted to 19 328 thousand liters in 2021, then stabilized around 20 700 thousand liters in 2022 and 2023.

Domestic production fluctuated between 2 000 and 2 700 thousand liters, while imports increased from 34 794 to 51 411 thousand liters by 2023, becoming the primary source of market supply. In 2024, regulatory updates imposed stricter labeling rules for grape juices and similar beverages, banning added preservatives and sugar in pure juices. The same year, local producer CIDO introduced environmentally friendly Tetra Pak packaging with attached caps and launched consumer campaigns with retailer Rimi to promote responsible consumption.

Latvia's grape wine production rebounded in 2021 after two consecutive years of decline. The country produced 3 million liters of grape wine last year, marking a 27.3% increase compared to 2020. Looking at the broader 2018-2021 period, production actually decreased by 4.1%, with an average annual decline of 1.4%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2020 at 2 million liters, while the sharpest year-over-year drop occurred in 2019 when production fell by 23.5%.

Latvia's grape wine exports reversed their downward trend in 2021 after declining for two straight years. Export volumes reached 25,194 thousand liters last year, representing a 9.7% increase compared to 2020. Over the full 2018-2021 period, exports decreased by 4.6%, which translates to an average annual decline of 1.6%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2020 at 22,959 thousand liters, while the most significant year-over-year decrease occurred in 2019 when exports fell by 8.8%.

Between 2018 and 2021, Russia consistently remained Latvia's primary export market for grape wine, accounting for 85.9% of total export volumes. The remaining 14.1% was distributed among numerous other countries.

Latvia's grape wine exports in value terms grew for the second consecutive year in 2021. The country exported $122.0 million worth of grape wine last year, representing a 24.5% increase compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, export values increased by 16.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.1%. The lowest export value was recorded in 2019 at $96.7 million, which also marked the most significant year-over-year decline of 8.0%.

From 2018 through 2021, Russia maintained its position as Latvia's dominant export market for grape wine in value terms, representing 86.7% of total export value. The remaining 13.3% was distributed across multiple other countries.

Latvia's grape wine imports declined in 2021 after two years of growth. Import volumes reached 41,953 thousand liters last year, representing a 4.9% decrease compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, imports increased by 20.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.4%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2020 at 44,120 thousand liters, while the most significant year-over-year increase occurred in 2019 when imports grew by 13.4%.

Between 2018 and 2021, Italy, Spain, and France were the leading sources of grape wine imports to Latvia in volume terms. Italy accounted for 35.8% of imports, Spain for 20.1%, and France for 10.9%. Together, these three countries represented 66.8% of Latvia's total grape wine imports by volume.

Latvia's grape wine imports in value terms declined in 2021 after two years of growth. Import values reached $143.8 million last year, representing a 1.5% decrease compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, import values increased by 30.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 9.3%. The highest import value was recorded in 2020 at $146.0 million, which also marked the most significant year-over-year increase of 15.3%.
