The market for fresh, chilled or frozen goat meat in Zimbabwe expanded from 25 980 t in 2018 to 34 292 t in 2023, driven initially by a rising local appetite for the product and the emergence of new domestic markets consuming a significant share of output. Government and industry promotion of goat farming as a low-cost, climate-resilient enterprise for smallholders supported production growth, while projects like the Value Chain Alliance for Livestock Upgrading and Empowerment began scaling up value chains to deliver quality-assured meat.

Despite pandemic-related lockdowns in 2021 that reduced demand from the hospitality sector, the goat herd's resilience to drought conditions and shorter reproductive cycle helped maintain production. Concurrent government programmes to expand the national herd and explore export markets, alongside the introduction of hardy meat breeds and improved nutrition practices, underpinned market recovery and growth after a brief stabilization.

In the latter part of the period, the industry's strategic focus on accessing export markets, supported by trade promotion bodies, and growing consumer recognition of goat meat as a nutritious protein source fueled further increases in market volume. Efforts to formalize market structures aimed to improve supply chain consistency and meet rising domestic and international demand.

Zimbabwe's goat meat production experienced a two-year period of growth before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 29,542 tonnes, representing a significant 13.7% increase from the previous year. However, in 2020, production fell slightly to 28,830 tonnes, marking a 2.4% decrease compared to 2019. Over the entire 2017-2020 period, production grew by 19.7%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 6.2%.
