Earlier Report Observations

Thailand's goat meat market volume grew from 1 792 metric tons in 2018 to 1 882 metric tons by 2023. The foundation for this expansion was laid early when the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives implemented a policy to develop meat goat farming in the Northeast region, particularly in Udon Thani province, under the national goat strategy for 2017-2024. Concurrently, goat farmer groups in Sakon Nakhon province organized to set unified purchase prices to prevent price suppression and announced plans to establish their own slaughterhouse to increase value addition and gain greater market control.

Market volume continued a steady upward trajectory, reaching 1 878 metric tons in 2021. The growth through this period reflects the sustained impact of the earlier structural support for producers and farm organization. In 2022, the market volume experienced a slight adjustment to 1 869 metric tons, marking a period of stabilization.

A significant shift in consumer dynamics occurred in 2022 as soaring pork prices in Thailand made goat meat a more attractive alternative, broadening its appeal beyond the traditional Muslim consumer base. This increased demand helped energize the market, supporting a recovery in volume, which rose to 1 882 metric tons in 2023.
