Earlier Report Observations
The Swiss goat meat market volume showed considerable fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After growing to 767 t in 2019, the market contracted sharply to 624 t in 2020, rebounded strongly to a high of 773 t in 2022, and then fell again to 627 t in 2023. Domestic production moved in a similar range from 498 t to 601 t, while import volumes varied widely between 94 t and 217 t over the period.
Goat meat maintained its niche status in the Swiss meat market. In 2023, it accounted for about 2% of retail meat sales and 6.8% of meat consumption in the out-of-home sector. Overall consumer preferences for meat remained stable, with poultry consistently leading fresh meat sales, and no major regulatory changes specifically targeting goat meat were reported.
