Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, goat meat production in Nepal increased from 70 802 metric tons to 75 023 metric tons. This growth was primarily driven by a more than 37% rise in the goat population and the commercial expansion of goat farming. The government supported the sector through policies aimed at achieving self-sufficiency and by establishing procedures to promote meat production and export.

Production temporarily declined to 70 755 metric tons in 2021, likely due to ongoing disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it recovered to 74 241 metric tons by 2022, aided by stricter quarantine measures that protected domestic production and sustained high festival demand, particularly during Dashain.

By 2023, output reached 77 162 metric tons, supported by intensified monitoring of meat shops, improved market management, and greater participation of women and youth in goat farming. The adoption of crossbreeding and modern breeding techniques further contributed to the sector's long-term expansion.
