Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the Indonesian ginger market experienced fluctuations. Production declined in 2019, continuing a pre-existing trend of average annual decrease, but recovered in 2020 as demand surged sharply due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with ginger being widely sought after as an immunity-boosting product.

The market peaked in 2021, with production reaching 307 thousand tons and market volume hitting 312 thousand tons. This spike was directly driven by sustained high pandemic-related demand and support from financial institutions like Bank Jatim, which helped develop export capabilities. However, in 2022, production fell by nearly 20% due to climate fluctuations and stabilizing demand, while the market saw the entry of a new player, PT Enha Sentosa Indonesia, which successfully exported ginger with local banking support.

In 2023, market volume contracted to 164 thousand tons, partly explained by a significant rise in export activity, whose value more than doubled year-on-year in the first half. Production continued to decline, though government-backed export promotion programs, such as Desa Devisa in Pacitan, continued to stimulate overseas sales.
