After a contraction in 2022 to 4 564 t and USD 9.5 million, the market rebounded in 2023 to 4 919 t and USD 10.8 million. This recovery was supported by the Grocery Industry Competition Act 2023 coming into force, which improved market access for smaller retailers and suppliers. Simultaneously, rising consumer demand for locally grown garlic, including the emergence of new growing regions like Taranaki and new product segments such as black garlic, contributed to broader consumption.
