Domestic production of dried shelled legumes in New Zealand remained consistently stable from 2018 to 2023, hovering between 51,000 and 52,400 tonnes annually. Over the same period, the total physical market volume showed greater variability, initially declining from 49,191 tonnes in 2018 to a low of 44,401 tonnes in 2021.

The market recovered to 46,772 tonnes in 2022 before expanding sharply by 38% to reach 64,354 tonnes in 2023. This surge was directly driven by a doubling of import volumes, which jumped to 26,465 tonnes in 2023, significantly exceeding the typical import levels of 10,000–13,000 tonnes seen in prior years.

In value terms, the market followed a similar trajectory, growing from $66.4 million in 2018 to $90.5 million in 2023. This increase reflects both the larger physical volume available in the domestic market and underlying shifts in the monetary value of production and trade.
