Earlier Report Observations

Following 2018, the frozen potato market volume in Eastern Asia contracted, primarily driven by a sharp decline in imports. In 2019, China's restrictions on fresh potato imports for food safety reasons affected supply chains, contributing to a reduced total market volume. Imports continued to fall in 2020, although the value of imports rose due to increased global prices and growing fast-food consumption, which was reflected in the market's higher monetary value.

From 2021 onward, the market began to recover, supported by rising demand for convenient frozen foods and advances in quick-freezing technology. This led to the launch of premium products and a wider assortment. The growth of online retail and consumer preference for convenience further sustained the expansion, particularly in value terms, where the market size increased from $30.5 million in 2020 to $42.1 million by 2023.

In the post-COVID period, an accelerated shift toward frozen meal kits and simplified recipes blurred the lines between traditional frozen items and meal solutions. By 2024, companies were introducing new technologies such as smart food vending machines and responding to demand for affordable convenience products. Additionally, Chinese government policy support and increased agricultural investment fostered growth in domestic frozen potato production.
