Earlier Report Observations
Production of fresh papayas in West Africa increased consistently from 926 000 t in 2018 to 1 001 000 t in 2023, with market volume growing in parallel from 925 000 t to 1 001 000 t. The market experienced a period of stability around 933 000 t in 2019-2020 before entering a phase of stronger expansion.
The most notable growth occurred from 2021 onward, with production rising by over 40 000 t in two years. In 2023, the increase was partly driven by rising export prices for papayas in Côte d'Ivoire, which reached approximately 2.05 USD/kg. This price improvement enhanced profitability for producers, encouraging higher output.
Throughout the period, the market benefited from a gradual shift in consumer preferences toward fresh, local, and healthy fruits in West Africa. These demand-side factors, combined with the region's focus on agricultural development, supported the steady expansion of fresh papaya production and consumption.
