The fresh papaya market in ECOWAS expanded steadily from 925 thousand tons in 2018 to over 1 million tons in 2023. This growth was supported by rising regional demand for the fruit, which encouraged higher production levels across the period. While global logistics disruptions and increased air freight costs from 2020 onward limited export opportunities, the very small export volume meant the primary market dynamic was driven by domestic consumption.

Papaya remains a niche fruit in the region, which tempered the pace of market expansion. The elevated transport costs and supply chain challenges, particularly evident during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, contributed to higher prices and made exports less competitive, indirectly supporting the availability of papaya for the local market. The consistent increase in production, reaching 1 001 thousand tons in 2023, reflects the market's response to sustained internal demand.

Fresh papayas production in ECOWAS declined after two years of growth. In 2020, production reached 933.6 thousand tonnes, showing no significant change from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 5.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.9%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 934.5 thousand tonnes, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 5.0%.

Exports fresh papayas from ECOWAS

Exports in kind, t

ECOWAS exported 1,047 tonnes of fresh papayas in 2020, representing a dramatic year-on-year decline of 28.7%. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 28.5%, equating to an annualized decline rate of 10.6%. The peak export volume was recorded in 2019 at 1,467 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 5.7%.

During 2017-2020, the export partner landscape for fresh papayas was diverse. Germany accounted for 36.4% of exports, France for 5.3%, and the United Kingdom for 4.2%. Together, these three countries represented 46.0% of total export flows, while the remaining 54.0% was distributed among numerous other trading partners.

The data reveals irregular changes, indicating a volatile market environment. In 2020, cross-border shipments of fresh papayas from ECOWAS totaled 2,106 thousand US dollars, showing a sharp advance of 99.7% compared to the previous year. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 1,055 thousand US dollars, creating a two-fold gap between the peak in 2020 and the trough in 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2018 at 3.6%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, Germany consistently dominated the export structure in value terms, accounting for 63.2% of exports. The Netherlands followed with 8.7%, and France with 6.7%. Together, these three countries represented 78.7% of total export value flows.

Imports fresh papayas to ECOWAS

The market exhibited an unstable trend throughout the timeframe. ECOWAS imported approximately 41 tonnes of fresh papayas in 2020, down by 64.2% compared to 2019. The maximum import volume was recorded in 2018 at 243 tonnes, while the minimum occurred in 2020, creating a six-fold variation between these years. The largest annual increase was recorded in 2018 at 124.2%.

ECOWAS imported 174 thousand US dollars worth of fresh papayas in 2020, equivalent to a small gain of 2.9% compared with 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 19.2%, with an average annual decline rate of 6.9%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 254 thousand US dollars, while the minimum occurred in 2019 at 169 thousand US dollars. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 33.5%, and the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 18.1%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, Spain consistently led the import structure in value terms, accounting for 39.8% of imports. India followed with 10.7%, and Portugal with 1.4%. Together, these three countries represented 52.0% of total import value flows.
