Earlier Report Observations

African fresh papaya production remained relatively stable from 2018 to 2020, averaging around 1.45 million tons annually. Drought conditions linked to El Niño in 2018 constrained agricultural output across the continent, limiting harvests. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further disrupted supply chains and distribution, contributing to the flat market volume during this period.

Output rebounded to 1.47 million tons in 2021, fueled by rising consumer demand for healthy and convenient food products, which increased interest in papaya puree and processed items. After a modest dip to 1.45 million tons in 2022, production rose to 1.5 million tons in 2023 as urbanization and shifting dietary habits boosted consumption of papaya-based goods, including dried fruits and purees.
