Earlier Report Observations

The fresh papaya market in the MENA region expanded from 64.8 thousand tons in 2018 to 76.1 thousand tons in 2023, though not without volatility. A 13.5% increase in 2019 was reversed the following year when the COVID-19 pandemic caused a 19.9% contraction to 58.9 thousand tons, disrupting supply chains and affecting consumer access.

Market volume recovered strongly in 2021, rising by 14.9% to 67.6 thousand tons, nearly regaining the pre-pandemic level. After stabilizing around 67.5 thousand tons in 2022, consumption grew again by 12.8% in 2023 to reach a new high. This overall growth was supported by a steady rise in domestic production, which more than doubled from 27.9 thousand tons to 47.8 thousand tons over the period, while imports remained a significant but fluctuating source of supply.
