Between 2018 and 2020, the market value of fresh pork in Slovenia showed mixed dynamics, reaching 190.6 million $ in 2019 before declining to 178.7 million $ in 2020. The initial stability in value was partly supported by the introduction of the 'selected quality – Slovenia' label for meat, which heightened focus on products of local origin across the sector. However, in 2020, a sharp price increase of approximately 30% occurred due to heightened European exports to China and global supply shortages from pig disease outbreaks, which reduced consumption volume and pulled down the total market value.

By 2023, the market value rebounded strongly to 223.7 million $ and continued growing to 236.9 million $ in 2024. This recovery was driven by persistent global price influences and increased import volumes to meet demand. Simultaneously, major players such as Farma Ihan intensified their focus on selling only Slovenian-origin pork, reinforcing the premium local segment and shaping consumer preferences toward domestically sourced products.

After two years of decline, Slovenia's fresh or chilled pork production rebounded in value terms. In 2020, output reached 82 694 thousand US dollars, showing minimal change from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value fell by 14.2%, representing a compound annual growth rate of -5.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 82 253 thousand US dollars, while the sharpest decline occurred in 2018 at 11.9%.

Slovenia's fresh or chilled pork production declined for the third consecutive year in volume terms. In 2020, output totaled 20 458 tonnes, representing a 6.1% decrease compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production volume dropped by 28.4%, equivalent to an annualized decline rate of 10.6%.

Following two years of growth, Slovenia's fresh or chilled pork export volume declined. In 2020, exports reached 1 233 tonnes, marking a significant 37.8% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export volume decreased by 7%, translating to an annualized decline rate of 2.4%. The peak was recorded in 2019 at 1 984 tonnes, while the strongest growth occurred in 2018 at 31.3%.

Throughout the 2017-2020 period, three key markets dominated Slovenia's fresh or chilled pork exports in volume terms: Croatia, Italy, and Spain. Together, these countries accounted for 80.7% of total export flows.

After two years of increase, Slovenia's fresh or chilled pork exports declined in value terms. In 2020, exports totaled 4.9 million US dollars, representing a 28.9% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, export value grew by 16.1%, equivalent to a compound annual growth rate of 5.1%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 6.9 million US dollars, with the strongest growth occurring in 2018 at 36.6%.

During 2017-2020, Croatia, Italy, and Spain led as the top buyers of Slovenian fresh or chilled pork in value terms. Croatia accounted for 59.9% of export value, Italy for 16.2%, and Spain for 7.1%. Together, these three markets represented 83.3% of Slovenia's total pork export value.

Throughout 2017-2020, Austria, Germany, and Spain were the leading sources of fresh or chilled pork imports to Slovenia in volume terms. Austria accounted for 35.7% of imports, Germany for 16.2%, and Spain for 13.3%. Collectively, these three countries supplied 65.1% of Slovenia's total pork import volume.

Over the 2017-2020 period, import value declined by 11.1%, representing a compound annual growth rate of -3.8%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 115.3 million US dollars, while the strongest growth occurred that same year at 5.2%.
