Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the Greek fresh pork market saw significant shifts. Market volume began at 233 thousand t in 2018, supported by stable consumer preferences for pork and an expanded import sector. In 2019, volume edged down to 230 thousand t, yet the market value increased to 709 million US dollars, pointing to rising prices. The year 2020 brought a sharp contraction to 203 thousand t in volume and 607 million US dollars in value, driven by a 4% decline in domestic pork production during the widespread sanitary crisis that disrupted supply chains.

After 2020, pork imports rebounded, reaching 165 thousand t in 2021 and climbing to 178 thousand t by 2024. Import value rose substantially from 420 million US dollars in 2021 to 657 million US dollars in 2024, fueled by inflationary pressures and higher costs. Domestic meat consumption recovered from the crisis by 2022, although pork production remained subdued. By 2024, pork imports grew further, with nearly half sourced from the Netherlands, as global market prospects improved amid lower feed costs and resilient demand.
