Earlier Report Observations

Production of fresh or chilled goose meat in Iran remained exceptionally stable from 2018 to 2023, with volumes moving narrowly between 2 594 t and 2 626 t. This resilience occurred against a backdrop of major policy shifts, including the government's use of red meat imports to regulate the market and the removal of preferential exchange rates for meat imports in 2018, which increased costs. Subsequent years saw severe price inflation, leading to the arrest of frozen meat distributors in 2019 and unprecedented currency devaluation in 2020 that drastically reduced household purchasing power.

Consumer behavior adapted to these pressures, with meat purchases becoming concentrated in the first ten days of the month by 2021. Despite these demand-side constraints, production volumes began a slight upward trend from 2021 onward. This coincided with the government's 2022 policy to provide meat subsidies to lower-income deciles, aimed at mitigating affordability issues, although implementation faced challenges. Persistent exchange rate increases and reported domestic supply shortages continued to inflate meat prices through 2023.

Throughout the period, the domestic goose meat sector demonstrated minimal volatility in output. The gradual increase from 2 610 t in 2021 to 2 626 t in 2023 suggests production adapted to sustained economic pressures, including systemic inflation and evolving subsidy frameworks, without significant disruption to overall supply.
