Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh or chilled duck meat in Singapore contracted between 2019 and 2020. In 2019, heightened environmental considerations regarding the greenhouse gas emissions from air-freighted chilled meats led some importers to favor frozen alternatives, reducing the volume of chilled duck meat traded. The following year, Singapore's landmark approval for the sale of lab-grown chicken meat in December 2020 introduced a novel alternative protein, further dampening consumer demand for conventional poultry products like duck. Consequently, the market volume fell from 6 521 t in 2018 to 5 437 t in 2020, with its value declining from 18.4 million $ to 15.7 million $.

A recovery commenced in 2021, with market volume rebounding to 6 293 t and continuing to grow to 6 468 t by 2023. The market value saw an even stronger increase, reaching 23.7 million $ in 2023. This expansion was supported by strategic efforts to enhance supply resilience. The Singapore Food Agency's push to diversify import sources, reaching 187 countries and regions, improved the security and stability of poultry supplies, including duck meat. Initiatives like the expanded Farm-to-Table Recognition Programme also encouraged local sourcing and consumer support for domestic farms. Furthermore, Malaysia's 2022 export ban on chicken products underscored the risks of reliance on single sources, prompting importers to secure alternative supplies for poultry, which benefited duck meat availability.

Regulatory and consumer trends continued to shape the market landscape. In 2024, the SFA approved Portugal as a new source for meat imports and revised permit fees for chilled meat imports, streamlining market access. The introduction of the Food Safety and Security Bill aimed to consolidate food import regulations, providing greater flexibility. The regulatory definition of poultry was officially updated to include duck, clarifying its scope. Concurrently, evolving consumer preferences towards premium, organic, and fresh foods, alongside growing interest in plant-based and lab-grown meat alternatives, presented both opportunities and challenges for the traditional fresh duck meat segment.
