Earlier Report Observations

The European market for fresh or chilled duck meat grew from 423 thousand tons in 2018 to 489 thousand tons in 2019. This upward trend was interrupted in 2020 when market volume fell to 386 thousand tons, a decline primarily driven by temporary production halts and shifts in demand resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

After recovering to 417 thousand tons in 2021, the market contracted again to 332 thousand tons in 2022. A renewed expansion followed in 2023, with volume reaching 364 thousand tons. This growth was supported by increasing disposable incomes, the expansion of modern retail formats, and the sector's gradual recovery from earlier avian flu disruptions, alongside innovations in farming and processing techniques.

Entering 2024, market dynamics continued to be shaped by a reduction in the epizootic risk of avian influenza to 'negligible' in France, allowing for more stable production. French duck meat consumption saw a significant surge, driven by growing consumer focus on animal welfare and preference for local, high-quality products. Product innovation also advanced, with new ready-to-cook and marinated duck meat segments emerging to meet demand for convenience.
