Earlier Report Observations

Production of fresh or chilled duck meat in Asia began a rapid climb from 2018 as the industry shifted toward scaled and standardized farming with the introduction of biosecurity systems. Breed optimization, particularly the adoption of white-feathered meat ducks, shortened rearing cycles and boosted yields, driving output up sharply from 3.8 million t in 2018 to 5.2 million t in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 created supply chain disruption risks, but the sector strengthened upstream-downstream collaboration, while the application of cold-chain logistics and low-temperature processing improved product quality and shelf life, supporting further production growth to 5.4 million t.

Growth continued in 2021, albeit at a slower pace of 1%, aided by rising consumer demand for low-fat, high-protein duck products due to increasing health awareness. Output accelerated again in 2022, expanding by 10% to 6.1 million t, alongside industry efforts to promote green and food-safe farming practices. By 2023, a drop in feed costs improved slaughter profitability, encouraging another rise in production to 6.4 million t despite an oversupply of ducklings that put downward pressure on prices.
