Between 2018 and 2020, Belgium's trade in acetic acid esters saw notable shifts, with imports peaking at 444.1 thousand tons in 2020 while exports rebounded strongly from a low in 2019. The activity of major international acetic acid producers like Mitsubishi Chemical and BASF within global supply chains supported increased trade flows through Belgium during that year.

The domestic market volume, available from 2021, rose to 262.1 thousand tons in 2022 but then contracted by 13% in 2023 and by a further 29% in 2024 to 160.9 thousand tons. Local production declined from 139.3 thousand tons in 2021 to 89.5 thousand tons in 2023, before recovering by 6% in 2024. This recovery in output was supported by substantial investments into green oleochemical production, where Belgium emerged as a key destination for new capacity aimed at acids used in ester manufacturing.
