Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, the market volume for forage products in Russia increased from 285.7 thousand tons to 318.9 thousand tons. This expansion was supported by a 2.8% annual rise in compound feed production, which boosted demand for feed ingredients. However, the market contracted sharply to 216.2 thousand tons in 2020 and fell further to 155.2 thousand tons in 2021.

A strong recovery occurred in 2022, with the market volume reaching 239.6 thousand tons. This turnaround was primarily driven by the onset of the special military operation, which disrupted imports of feed components and accelerated import substitution efforts within the domestic feed industry. Additionally, record production of feed for agricultural animals, exceeding 40 million tons that year, provided significant momentum. Growth continued into 2023, though at a moderated pace, with the market reaching 243.8 thousand tons. This period saw a 31% reduction in imports of pet food and active localization of production by foreign brands like Mars and Royal Canin, further consolidating domestic supply.

In 2024, the market dynamics are shaped by the continued development of local production capacity and heightened competition among Russian manufacturers. Demand is shifting toward natural and organic feed products, as well as functional and veterinary diets. Prices for compound feed have continued their upward trend, increasing by 11.1% in August 2024 year-on-year, influenced by sustained import substitution and ongoing innovation projects under the national 'Priority 2030' program.
