Earlier Report Observations

The alfalfa meal and pellets market in Russia expanded to 32 088 t in 2019 before contracting sharply to 16 832 t in 2020. This decline coincided with a rise in grain transportation costs that year, which increased operational expenses for processors and likely constrained production and market volume.

A recovery to 20 158 t occurred in 2021, partially driven by rising wheat prices that made alternative crops like alfalfa more attractive for cultivation. The market volume then fell to 14 287 t in 2022, influenced by a record Russian wheat harvest which lowered wheat prices and reduced the incentive for farmers to allocate land to alfalfa. Furthermore, European Union sanctions on wood pellets created a challenging environment for pellet exporters, potentially affecting related feed pellet segments.

After stabilizing around 14 211 t in 2023, the market grew to 18 210 t in 2024, a period which saw rising price indicators for domestic shipments, supporting increased market activity.
