Earlier Report Observations

The flax yarn market in Russia contracted from 3 565 t in 2018 to 2 616 t in 2020. This decline was driven by reduced demand in the light industry during 2019 and the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on consumption of flax fiber and yarn in 2020.

Market volume rebounded to 3 273 t in 2021 and reached a peak of 3 894 t in 2022. This growth was primarily fueled by the launch of new yarn production facilities in the Ivanovo region and the introduction of government subsidies for manufacturers of flax-containing yarn, approved in June 2022, which compensated producers for income losses.

After a decrease to 3 234 t in 2023, the market fell further to 2 915 t in 2024, as imports of yarn into Russia shrank by 5% and domestic flax yarn production dropped by 18.4%. During this period, the first full-cycle spinning mill using recycled raw materials commenced operations in Ivanovo. By 2025, production showed signs of recovery, increasing to 817 t, supported by ongoing state subsidies and investment in the sector.
