The Spanish fig market volume expanded from 41 302 tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 54 399 tonnes in 2020. This growth was supported by optimistic market projections and rising global demand, with estimates pointing to annual growth of 5.3% during the period, reinforcing Spain's role as the European Union's leading fig producer.

After 2020, the market contracted, falling to 33 301 tonnes by 2023. Intense competition from Turkish figs in both domestic and European markets squeezed producer prices and contributed to the decline. Simultaneously, growing interest in fresh fig production stimulated new plantings, particularly in the Extremadura region, laying the groundwork for future supply.

The 2024 fig campaign started with a smaller harvest due to heat and drought reducing fruit size and quality. Despite this, the sector benefited from innovation projects and quality improvements, with Spain consolidating its position as a major exporter within the EU.

Spain's fig production volume increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Spain produced 59 900 tons of figs, marking a strong 16.1% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 64.7%, with an annual growth rate of 18.1%.

Spain's fig production value increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output of figs in Spain was valued at 178.1 million US dollars, reflecting a sharp 26.7% year-over-year uptick. From 2017 to 2020, production value rose by 119.9%, with an annual growth rate of 30.0%.

Spain's volume of fig exports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 6 771 tons, representing a significant 10.5% drop compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 10%, equating to an annualized decline of 3.5%. The largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 4.6%, while the peak value occurred in 2018 with 7 871 tons.

From 2017 to 2020, France, the United States, and Portugal accounted for the largest share of Spain's fig exports in volume. France represented 39.6% of exports, the United States 15.6%, and Portugal 8.0%, together comprising 63.1% of total export flows.

After two years of gains, Spain's exported fig volumes declined. In 2020, exports came to 20.131 million US dollars, constituting a 2.3% loss compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 20.2%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 6.3%. The largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 18.8%, while the peak value occurred in 2019 with 20.612 million US dollars.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, France, Portugal, and Germany formed the core of Spain's fig exports in value terms. France accounted for 37.1% of exports, Portugal 9.7%, and Germany 9.2%, together taking 56.1% of total export flows.

After a two-year increase, Spain's imported fig volumes declined. In 2020, imports reached 1 269 tons, corresponding to a robust 13.1% decline compared to 2019. The largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 12.0%, while the peak value occurred in 2019 with 1 461 tons.
