Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2021, the volume of the fresh fig market in Peru contracted from 2 252 t to 1 690 t. This decline was primarily driven by a strategic shift toward exports, which reduced domestic availability. In 2018, scarcity in Lima markets due to production issues in the traditional Chilca zone already signaled supply constraints. However, from 2020 onward, the opening of new export destinations like the Netherlands, Germany, Hong Kong, and the United States, supported by investments in phytosanitary irradiation treatments, redirected a significant portion of the harvest abroad. Expectations of access to the U.S. market under the trade agreement further intensified export-oriented production in 2021.

After 2021, domestic market volume stabilized around 1 700 t. In 2022, logistical bottlenecks at Callao port and in northern regions temporarily limited export dispatches, even as cultivated area expanded in Chilca and other zones. The following year, export volume grew by 15%, but its value fell by 10%, and the entry of new exporters such as Frutícola del Sur S.A. and Fundo La Kiarita S.A.C. reshaped the export landscape. Simultaneously, an oversupply in the domestic market from January onward—representing about 60% of the harvest—depressed local prices, contributing to a slight recovery in internal consumption to 1 717 t in 2023.
