Earlier Report Observations

The fig market in Cyprus, measured by total volume, expanded from 1 562 t in 2018 to a peak of 1 930 t in 2020, a growth of over 20% driven by a concurrent rise in domestic production from 1 340 t to 1 760 t.

A reversal began in 2021, with market volume contracting to 1 430 t and further to 1 161 t in 2023. This decline was led by a sharp fall in local fig output, which dropped to 880 t in 2023. Although imports grew to 281 t in the same year, they could not compensate for the reduced domestic supply.

By 2023, the total market volume was approximately 25% below its 2020 peak, indicating a significant shift in supply dynamics for a market where exports remain negligible and consumption is primarily domestic.
