Earlier Report Observations
The volume of the fresh apple market in Cyprus expanded from 9 055 tons in 2018 to 10 944 tons in 2023, representing growth of over 20%. This increase was not linear, with the most pronounced surge occurring in 2019 when the market grew by more than 1 500 tons to reach 10 566 tons, driven overwhelmingly by a sharp rise in imports that compensated for a small dip in domestic output.
Following the 2019 peak, the market entered a phase of relative stability, fluctuating between 10 300 and 11 000 tons. A gradual recovery from 2020 to 2022 saw the market reach its highest point of 10 995 tons in 2022. This period was marked by a significant and steady rise in local apple production, which more than doubled from its 2018 level by 2022. In 2023, the market volume saw a marginal decline as a reduction in domestic production was partially offset by increased imports.
