Earlier Report Observations

The fibreboard market in Tanzania, measured by total market volume, remained at a high level between 2018 and 2021, fluctuating between 20 500 and 21 500 thousand m³. This was supported by stable domestic production of 2 000 thousand m³ each year and substantial imports, which peaked at 21 768 thousand m³ in 2019.

A sharp contraction occurred in 2022, when the market volume dropped to 13 154 thousand m³ and fell slightly further to 12 764 thousand m³ in 2023. This decline was driven by a surge in exports, which rose from minimal levels to 6 784 thousand m³ in 2022, significantly reducing the net volume available for domestic consumption. Imports also gradually declined from their peak during this period.

Preliminary trade data for 2024 indicates a continued shift, with imports rebounding to 22 314 thousand m³ but exports jumping to 13 327 thousand m³, suggesting strong outward shipments persisted.
