The feldspar market volume in Africa contracted significantly from 816 thousand tons in 2018 to 594 thousand tons in 2022. This overall decline included a notable drop in 2019 and 2020, a partial rebound in 2021, and a steep fall in the final tracked year.

This reduction in domestic market volume occurred alongside a major expansion in local production, which grew from 630 thousand tons to 1,078 thousand tons. However, a dramatic rise in exports—from 73 thousand tons to 727 thousand tons over the same period—diverted the majority of the additional output away from the African market. Stable import levels between 232 and 267 thousand tons were insufficient to compensate for this shift.

The trajectory of soaring exports continued beyond 2022, with volumes reaching 1,289 thousand tons by 2024, indicating a sustained focus on international trade that reshaped the region's feldspar supply dynamics.

After two years of decline, feldspar production in Africa rebounded. In 2020, Africa produced 649.3 K t of feldspar, marking an 8.1% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 3.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.2%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 600.9 K t, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 with a 6.5% drop.

Exports feldspar from Africa

Feldspar exports from Africa have grown for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 249.8 K t, which is a 100.7% increase compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 2 653.3%, translating to a compound annual growth rate of 202.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, India and Spain accounted for 91.2% of Africa's total feldspar exports in volume, with the remaining share distributed among other destinations, each contributing smaller amounts.

Feldspar exports from Africa have increased in value for the third year in a row. In 2020, Africa exported feldspar worth 54 271 K US dollars, up 55.7% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, export value rose by 6 695.7%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 308.1%.

After two years of growth, Africa's feldspar imports declined. In 2020, imports totaled 232.1 K t, down 13.1% from the prior year. The peak import volume was recorded in 2019 at 267.0 K t, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with a 12.5% rise.

During 2017-2020, Turkey and Spain were the main suppliers of feldspar to Africa, together representing 93.9% of total import volume, with the rest spread across other countries in smaller portions.

Following two years of increase, feldspar imports to Africa in value terms declined. In 2020, Africa imported feldspar worth 20 987 K US dollars, an 11.7% decrease year-over-year.
