Between 2018 and 2019, the Hungarian envelopes market held steady at about 3 600 t, supported by foreign investment in paper manufacturing and growing demand for paper packaging from expanding e-commerce. Market volume then dropped sharply to 2 544 t in 2020.

A recovery followed in 2021, with volume rising to 3 009 t and value leaping to 10.1 million US dollars, driven by sharp increases in paper and raw material prices due to higher energy costs and supply chain disruptions. From 2022 through 2024, the market shrank gradually to 2 519 t, as digitalization reduced office paper consumption and the industry adapted to sustainability trends, despite ongoing investment in production capacity.

Following a two-year drop, Hungary's envelope production volume has increased. In 2021, 8 661 tonnes of envelopes were produced in Hungary, representing a 16.2% gain compared to the previous year. Between 2018 and 2021, production rose by 4.5%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 1.5%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2020 at 7 453 tonnes, which saw the largest decline of 5.9% that year.

Exported envelope volumes from Hungary have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2021, exports amounted to 8 034 tonnes, up by 14.8% year-over-year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, exports grew by 11.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.6%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 6 823 tonnes, which experienced the largest decline of 5.7% that year.

From 2018 to 2021, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland were the key destinations for Hungary's envelope exports in volume terms. Austria accounted for 48.0% of exports, Germany for 28.0%, and Switzerland for 10.6%, together representing 86.6% of total export flows.

Envelope deliveries from Hungary have increased for the second year in a row. In 2021, exports reached 13 959 thousand US dollars, up by 13.0% compared to the previous year. Between 2018 and 2021, exports rose by 4.2%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 1.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 12 274 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 8.4% that year.
