The market for fresh or chilled edible brassicas in Northern Africa experienced sustained volume growth from 2018 to 2023, with total consumption rising from 1 016 thousand tonnes to 1 313 thousand tonnes. This increase of nearly 30% was driven by a steady expansion in domestic production, which grew from 1 034 thousand tonnes to 1 367 thousand tonnes over the five-year period.

Growth rates fluctuated during this time, with a notable slowdown in 2022 when market volume increased by only 1.5%. This was followed by a strong recovery in 2023, where volume jumped by 10.9% to add 129 thousand tonnes. Throughout the period, export volumes rose consistently, more than doubling from 18 thousand tonnes to 54 thousand tonnes, yet this did not prevent the overall market from expanding.

In value terms, the market showed greater variability, starting at 672.6 million US dollars in 2018 and reaching 884.2 million in 2023. The most significant value increase occurred in 2021, when the market surged by over 24% to 832.8 million US dollars, reflecting changes in prices alongside production gains.

In 2020, the value of edible brassicas production in Northern Africa reached 683.9 million US dollars, showing a modest 0.9% increase from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production value grew by 12.5%, translating to an annualized rate of 4.0%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 684.5 million US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019 with a 1.0% drop, while the biggest increase was in 2018 with a 12.6% rise.

Following two years of growth, edible brassicas exports from Northern Africa declined. In 2020, exports totaled 24 516 tonnes, showing little change from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 54.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 15.7%. The peak was in 2019 at 24 540 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 34.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the main buyers of edible brassicas from Northern Africa were Mauritania (57.4% of exports in kind), the Netherlands (18.7%), and Russia (7.7%). Together, these three countries accounted for 83.9% of total exports in kind.

After two years of increase, cross-border shipments of edible brassicas from Northern Africa declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 14 766 thousand US dollars, a 1.7% decrease from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 56.6%, equating to an annualized rate of 16.1%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 15 028 thousand US dollars, with the largest increase occurring in 2018 at 27.9%.
