Earlier Report Observations

The dried shelled chickpea market in Northern Africa saw initial growth driven by strong consumer demand during Ramadan, which spurred domestic production to reach 204.6 thousand tonnes in 2019. This demand, coupled with supply constraints from reduced rainfall, pushed the total market volume to 274.8 thousand tonnes. The following year, despite reports of adequate national reserves that maintained price stability, production dipped to 188.1 thousand tonnes, pulling the market volume down to 263.9 thousand tonnes.

Market volume then fluctuated, climbing to 269.9 thousand tonnes in 2021 and peaking at 282.5 thousand tonnes in 2022 as imports rose. However, a sharp increase in exports to 86.9 thousand tonnes in 2023 reversed the trend, drawing market volume down to 252.3 thousand tonnes even as imports continued to grow.

Entering 2024, a prolonged six-year drought prompted government intervention, including subsidies for certified chickpea seeds and direct support to farmers. Simultaneously, the Russia-Ukraine conflict disrupted global legume supply chains, exerting upward pressure on prices and affecting local market conditions.
