The Hungarian market for fresh edible brassicas displayed notable volume shifts between 2018 and 2023. Consumption peaked at 85 824 t in 2019, then contracted sharply to 74 676 t in 2020. A modest recovery brought volumes back above 76 000 t in 2021 and 2022, before a further decline to 65 196 t in 2023.

In value terms, the market reached its highest point at $89 million in 2019, suggesting stronger pricing despite only a slight volume increase. After falling to $76 million in 2020, value recovered to $81 million in 2021 and then gradually eased to $75 million by 2023.

After two consecutive years of decline, edible brassicas production in Hungary showed signs of recovery. In 2021, production reached 57 700 tonnes, remaining relatively stable compared to the previous year. Looking at the broader period from 2018 to 2021, production decreased by 21.4%, which translates to an average annual decline of 7.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2020 at 57 390 tonnes, which also saw the most significant year-on-year drop of 17.0%.

In 2021, the value of edible brassicas production in Hungary stood at 67 346 thousand US dollars, showing a moderate increase of 8.2% from the previous year. Over the four-year period from 2018 to 2021, production value decreased by 4.9%, averaging an annual decline of 1.7%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 62 225 thousand US dollars, while the peak occurred in 2019 at 75 421 thousand US dollars. The most substantial year-on-year decrease happened in 2020 with a 17.5% drop.

Following two years of contraction, Hungary's edible brassicas exports rebounded. In 2021, export volumes reached 5 838 tonnes, representing a solid 23.4% increase compared to 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, exports grew by 9.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.0%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2020 at 4 731 tonnes, which also experienced the most significant year-on-year decline of 10.1%.

From 2018 to 2021, Romania, Finland, and Czechia consistently served as Hungary's primary markets for edible brassicas exports by volume. Romania accounted for 19.1% of exports, Finland for 17.0%, and Czechia for 15.2%. Together, these three countries represented 51.3% of Hungary's total edible brassicas export flows during this period.

Over the 2018-2021 period, export value grew by 32.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 5 130 thousand US dollars, which also saw the most significant year-on-year decline of 10.7%.
