Earlier Report Observations

The duck meat and offal market in SADC grew to a peak of 21 093 tonnes in 2019, then contracted over the following two years before stabilizing around 20 000 tonnes from 2022. Domestic production increased consistently from 18 127 tonnes to 19 231 tonnes between 2018 and 2023, while import volumes showed sharp fluctuations, initially surging before declining markedly.

Rising household incomes boosted demand for meat, including poultry, supporting the initial market expansion. The subsequent downturn was driven by COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020, which disrupted supply chains and limited product availability, and by active trade policies such as import quotas and anti-dumping duties that further constrained imports in 2021.

Market volume stabilized from 2022 onward despite inflationary pressures from high global commodity prices and elevated feed costs. Increased domestic output compensated for lower imports, while regulatory actions, including enhanced food safety enforcement, influenced market conditions. Record-high poultry meat prices moderated demand growth, contributing to the flat overall volume.
