Between 2018 and 2023, production of dried shelled pigeon peas in South-eastern Asia declined from 359.4 thousand tonnes to 299.7 thousand tonnes. Government subsidies and investments in agriculture, along with technological advancements in hybrid seed production, provided underlying support. However, persistent challenges such as pests, diseases, and seasonal weather patterns, particularly emphasized in 2022 and 2023, constrained output growth.

The domestic market volume contracted sharply from 322.4 thousand tonnes in 2020 to 54.8 thousand tonnes in 2023. This was overwhelmingly driven by a surge in exports, which escalated from 0.6 thousand tonnes in 2020 to 245.8 thousand tonnes in 2023. Global factors, including fluctuating international commodity prices and logistics challenges, improved the region's export market access and redirected supply overseas. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 also bolstered demand for shelf-stable foods like dried pigeon peas, though this did not offset the export pull.

Consumer shifts towards plant-based proteins and organic products, reinforced by health-conscious trends, continued to influence demand. The entry of new players and expansion of processing facilities from 2023 onward indicated ongoing industry development. However, these dynamics occurred alongside the dominant trend of rising exports, which fundamentally reshaped the domestic market balance.

Production of dried shelled pigeon peas in South-eastern Asia has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 321.1 thousand tonnes, marking a moderate decrease of 7.8% compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 42.2%, with an average annual decline of 16.7%.

Exports of dried shelled pigeon peas from South-eastern Asia have also dropped for the third consecutive year. In 2020, export volume reached 567 tonnes, showing a sharp decline of 89.8% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 99.4%, with an average annual reduction of 82.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Dominican Republic, India, and the United States were the key destinations for exports in kind. The Dominican Republic accounted for 23.7% of exports, India for 23.2%, and the United States for 11.5%. Together, these three countries made up 58.4% of total export flows.

The value of dried shelled pigeon peas exported from South-eastern Asia has fallen for the third year running. In 2020, exports totaled 485 thousand US dollars, representing a sharp decline of 85.9% year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 99.1%, with an average annual drop of 78.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, exports in value terms were distributed across a broad range of partner countries. The Dominican Republic led with 18.7% of export value, followed by India at 13.1%, and the United States at 11.8%. Combined, these three countries accounted for 43.6% of total export flows.

Import volumes showed significant volatility during these years. In 2017, imports hit their lowest point, then peaked in 2018—a 2.4-fold increase between these two years. In 2020, South-eastern Asia imported approximately 1 787 tonnes of dried shelled pigeon peas, a steep gain of 52.3% compared to 2019. The highest volume was recorded in 2018 at 2 534 tonnes. The largest decline occurred in 2019, falling by 53.7%, while the biggest increase was in 2018, rising by 140.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, India, Malawi, and Tanzania were the primary suppliers of dried shelled pigeon peas to South-eastern Asia in terms of volume. India contributed 31.7% of imports in kind, Malawi 21.7%, and Tanzania 21.6%. Together, these three countries comprised 75.1% of total imports.
