Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for dried shelled peas in Sub-Saharan Africa grew from 654 thousand tons in 2018 to 749 thousand tons in 2023. This expansion was primarily driven by increasing consumer demand for plant-based proteins, which significantly boosted consumption and led to a 17% surge in market size in 2020. Initially, the region's production was characterized by traditional farming with low yields, resulting in a reliance on imports to meet domestic needs.

Supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily reduced the market volume in 2021. Recovery was supported by government and institutional initiatives to adopt improved agricultural practices, such as drip irrigation and pest-resistant varieties, aiming to increase local production. Concurrently, the rise of well-funded Nigerian producers strengthened the region's export capacity, while ongoing innovation in pea-based food products continued to underpin market growth through 2023.
