The market volume for dried shelled peas in Middle Africa experienced strong growth from 2018 to 2022, more than doubling from 12 844 tonnes to 27 109 tonnes. This expansion was fueled by a rapid increase in imports, which rose from 4 571 tonnes to 21 883 tonnes, while domestic production remained steady between 8 275 and 8 500 tonnes.

In 2023, the market volume saw a modest decline to 25 821 tonnes. This slight contraction occurred as a rise in exports to 5 091 tonnes offset continued growth in imports, which reached 22 412 tonnes, reflecting ongoing demand for the product.

Preliminary data for 2024 indicates a sharp surge in imports to 50 110 tonnes, pointing to a major market shift. This jump aligns with climate change impacts on local legume yields, increasing reliance on imports, and the facilitation of regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Middle Africa's dried shelled peas production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 8,520 tonnes, marking a 1.4% increase from 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 4.3%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 1.4%.

The export market for dried shelled peas in Middle Africa experienced significant volatility during the observed period. Exports hit their lowest point in 2018 at just 2 tonnes, then surged to a peak of 560 tonnes in 2020, representing a massive 242-fold increase between these years. In 2020 alone, exports jumped by 177.2% compared to the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2018, with a drop of 17.2%, while the most dramatic increase was in 2019, soaring by 8,615.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for Middle Africa's dried shelled peas exports were Uganda, accounting for 20.3% of the total volume, Singapore at 15.2%, and Spain with 0.6%. Together, these three countries made up 36.1% of all exports in kind.

The export market in value terms also showed high volatility. Exports reached their lowest point in 2018 at 3,000 US dollars, then climbed to a high of 414,000 US dollars in 2020, a 150-fold increase. In 2020, the value of exports grew by 4,206.6% compared to the previous year. The largest decline was recorded in 2018, with a decrease of 15.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Singapore was the leading contributor to export value, making up 43.1% of the total, followed by Spain at 1.5% and Uganda at 1.4%. Combined, these three countries accounted for 46.1% of all export flows in monetary terms.

Imports of dried shelled peas into Middle Africa were volatile over the observed period. They bottomed out in 2018 at 4,571 tonnes, then rose to a peak of 11,964 tonnes in 2020, a 2.6-fold increase. In 2020, imports grew by 45.5% compared to the previous year. The largest decline was in 2018, with a drop of 50.6%, while the biggest increase occurred in 2019, rising by 79.9%.

In 2020, the import volume totaled 7,119,000 US dollars, up 66.4% from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 27.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 8.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 3,523,000 US dollars, and the largest decline that year was 36.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the United States remained the primary supplier in value terms, accounting for 48.7% of imports, followed by Ukraine at 11.6% and Italy at 10.9%. These three countries together formed 71.2% of total import value.
