The market volume for dried shelled peas in India fell from 1,830 thousand tons in 2018 to 1,725 thousand tons in 2019, then dropped sharply to 950 thousand tons in 2020. It further decreased to 843 thousand tons in 2021.

Market volume stabilized at 836 thousand tons in 2022 before rising to 1,125 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was supported by the removal of import duties: the Government of India eliminated the 10% duty on pigeon peas in March 2023 and waived the 50% basic customs duty on yellow peas in December 2023, facilitating imports and contributing to market expansion.

In 2024, pea imports surged to 2,948 thousand tons, driven by the extension of duty-free import policy for yellow peas until March 2026. Concurrent policy changes, including the imposition of a Minimum Import Price and port restrictions, aimed to balance supply, control inflation, and encourage domestic pulse sowing.

Following a two-year decline, India's dried shelled peas production rebounded in 2020, reaching 860 K t. This represented a 6.0% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, production fell by 14.9%, averaging an annual decline of 5.2%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 812 K t, which also saw the steepest drop of 18.3%.

In 2020, the value of dried shelled peas output in India stood at 418.3 M $ US, a significant 10.6% rise from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production value decreased by 8.6%, with an average annual decline of 3.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 378.2 M $ US, while the highest was in 2018 at 482.8 M $ US. The sharpest decline occurred in 2019, falling by 21.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and Bangladesh were the top buyers of dried shelled peas from India, accounting for 33.1%, 28.2%, and 11.2% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, they represented 72.5% of total exports.

Export values exhibited an unstable trend over these years. The low point was in 2019 at 1 M $ US, rising to a high of 4 M $ US in 2020, a 3.9-fold increase. In 2020, export value jumped by 287.2% compared to 2019. The steepest decline occurred in 2019, falling by 33.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States were the leading destinations for India's dried shelled peas exports in value terms, with shares of 30.5%, 16.6%, and 10.4%, respectively. Collectively, they made up 57.5% of total export value.
