Earlier Report Observations

The market for dried shelled legumes in the Dominican Republic grew from 181.8 thousand tons in 2018 to 215.4 thousand tons in 2020. This expansion was supported by the state-owned Banco Agrícola, which provided financing to small and medium producers, enhancing production capacity. However, adverse climatic conditions, including hurricanes and droughts, periodically constrained domestic output, leading to a significant increase in imports to meet demand.

Market volume contracted to 204.7 thousand tons in 2021 and fell sharply to 154.0 thousand tons in 2022, primarily due to a collapse in imports. Production remained resilient, aided by ongoing institutional support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Banco Agrícola. In 2023, the market rebounded strongly to 236.0 thousand tons, as imports recovered and production increased. Government compensation payments to farmers affected by Hurricane Fiona helped stabilize supply, while broader agricultural policies focused on export development supported the recovery.
