Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh or chilled lettuce and chicory in the Dominican Republic showed gradual growth in the early years of the period, with volume rising from 6 263 t in 2018 to 6 422 t by 2021. This slow upward trend shifted markedly from 2022 onward, when the market expanded by 18% to 7 589 t and then surged by 37% in 2023 to reach 10 369 t.

This acceleration was supported by a substantial increase in domestic production, which grew from 6 126 t in 2021 to 10 130 t in 2023. At the same time, export shipments fell sharply, from 35 t in 2021 to only 20 t in 2023, making more output available for the local market. Import volumes remained relatively stable, indicating that the supply expansion was primarily home-grown.

As a result, the total available volume of lettuce and chicory in the Dominican Republic more than doubled between 2018 and 2023, with the most rapid growth occurring in the last two years of the period.
