Between 2018 and 2023, the market for dried shelled cow peas in Mozambique saw initial growth followed by a sharp contraction. The market volume increased from 78 819 t in 2018 to 85 738 t in 2019, supported by the state-run Cereals Institute of Mozambique (ICM) acting as a buyer of last resort for unsold beans, which secured producer incomes and encouraged production. However, from 2020 to 2022, the market gradually declined to 81 430 t as production stabilized and exports began to rise.

A major shift occurred in 2023 when market volume plummeted to 36 894 t. This was primarily due to a surge in exports to India, which reached 46 278 t. The export boom followed India's decision in late 2022 to allow unlimited imports of cow peas from Mozambique, removing a previous 200 000 t quota. Although port blockages initially hindered shipments, the opening of the Indian market ultimately led to a significant redirection of supply abroad. In 2023, a Mozambican court reinstated the export quota, but this ruling came after the large export volume had already been shipped, drastically reducing local availability.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production declined by 2.2%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 0.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 78 817 tonnes, while the highest was in 2019 at 85 646 tonnes. The most significant drop occurred in 2018, with a 7.4% decrease, whereas the largest increase was observed in 2019, with an 8.7% rise.
