Earlier Report Observations

Tomato production in Mali began the period at 204.7 thousand tons in 2018, supported by government initiatives to promote agricultural investment and a specific project to develop irrigated perimeters that aimed to boost vegetable output, including tomatoes. However, output fell sharply to 160.0 thousand tons in 2019 before rebounding to 233.7 thousand tons in 2020. This recovery coincided with the introduction of an official price benchmark by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, which provided more predictable pricing for agricultural products, and clarified public procurement rules that may have increased institutional demand for tomatoes.

After a slight dip to 219.0 thousand tons in 2021, production resumed growth, reaching 246.2 thousand tons by 2023. The year 2021 saw the spread of soilless bio-horticulture and urban gardening around Bamako, adding to local tomato supply and diversifying distribution channels. In 2022, specific climatic guidance for tomato cultivation during the favorable September-March season and the ongoing price benchmark helped sustain output growth, with production reaching 238.4 thousand tons.
