In 2021, production dropped sharply to 475 thousand tons, causing the market volume to fall to 362 thousand tons. The market recovered in 2022 to 507 thousand tons as production rebounded to 580 thousand tons, aided by ongoing government support and breeding programs focused on yield and quality.

By 2023, the market expanded to 607 thousand tons, driven largely by a surge in imports to 314 thousand tons while production held at 580 thousand tons. That year, new regulations made certified seed use mandatory and linked subsidy payments to crop‑rotation compliance. In 2024, subsidy rates were raised, and allergen‑labeling rules for chickpea products came into effect, shaping both supply and consumer information.
