The market for dried shelled chickpeas in Nepal expanded substantially from 2018 to 2023, with total volume rising from 37 396 tons to 65 352 tons. This growth was not linear, as a modest dip occurred in 2019 before a sharp increase in 2020 and 2021. The market then contracted slightly in 2022 before resuming its upward trajectory in 2023.

The rise in market size was primarily driven by a surge in imports, which more than doubled over the period from 26 259 tons to 53 373 tons. Domestic production remained relatively stable, fluctuating between 10 675 and 12 196 tons, and thus played a secondary role in the overall market expansion. The temporary decline in 2022 corresponded with a drop in import volumes, while the recovery in 2023 aligned with renewed import growth.
