The dried shelled beans market in Serbia began the period at 41 405 t in 2018. The enforcement of EU-aligned food labeling rules and a 7% reduction in irrigated agricultural land that year contributed to a subsequent 11.4% market contraction to 36 696 t in 2019, as lower irrigation availability constrained bean yields.

Market volume recovered to 39 305 t in 2020 and reached a peak of 40 708 t in 2022. This growth was driven by increased imports, which offset declining domestic production. In 2022, a notable 8% drop in overall agricultural production volume and the implementation of government price ceilings on basic foodstuffs further stimulated import demand to meet consumption needs.

In 2023, the market fell by 8.1% to 37 418 t, primarily due to a sharp decline in imports. Despite a reported 9% increase in total agricultural production that year, bean production continued to trend downward. Ongoing regulatory harmonization with EU standards and expanded export quotas for peas and beans were key factors shaping the trade environment throughout the period.

Serbia's dried shelled beans production increased after a two-year decline. In 2020, Serbia produced 24 725 tonnes of dried shelled beans, which was 0.7% higher than the previous year. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 14.1%, averaging an annual decline of 4.9%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 24 550 tonnes, with the largest year-on-year drop of 8.3% occurring that same year.

The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 72 tonnes, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 with a drop of 79.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Sweden, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia were the leading destinations for Serbia's dried shelled beans exports in volume terms. Sweden accounted for 26.8% of exports, Bosnia and Herzegovina for 20.1%, and North Macedonia for 17.7%. Together, these three countries represented 64.6% of total export flows.
